“No, Vern,” I said. “You were scared. Anyone would have run away.”

Vern shook his head slowly.

“Besides,” I added, “I’m the one who dared her to stay overnight in that stupid house. It’s my fault.”

“You dared her?” Vern asked, looking at me. “What do you mean?”

“We’re the Braves – the Tide Cliff Summer Braves,” I explained. “We dare each other to do brave things. It’s our club.”

Vern nodded. “I get it,” he said. “I’d like to help you find out who that man was.”

I thought for a second. Could the man Vern saw have been the homeless man? Was he the one who had poisoned Kayla?

But why would he want to hurt her? And how could he have got through the locked bedroom door?

Vern was looking at me, waiting for an answer.

“Of course,” I finally replied. “Let’s get back to the shack. That’s our headquarters.”
